GOSPEL NUGGET # 58

Mt 27:51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom;...

The veil of the temple was a very thick curtain, 4 inches thick and was very sturdy that no human being could split in two. It was so strong that not even the strength of two horses could break the curtain apart.

Beyond the veil was the place called the Most Holy Place. Only the high priest could enter it once a year. And only with a blood sacrifice was he given access into it. It was a place where God and sinful man meet in the Old Testament days.

The veil was torn in two immediately after the Lord Jesus died:

Mt 27:50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Mt 27:51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom...

Because of His sacrifice on the Cross for man's sins, access into God was opened. Just as it was humanly impossible to split the curtain in two, so it is impossible for man to gain access to God by his efforts, works and sacrifices. Access was gained only and solely because of what the Savior did on the Cross.

Notice the manner in which it was split: "...the veil of the temple was torn in two FROM TOP TO BOTTOM..."

It was a divine work (from top to bottom) not human (from the bottom up). Jesus was and is the Great High Priest that gives a sinner access to God. A sinner can only come to God through Him.
It is He, not our religiosity, not our good character, not our charitable deeds, that opened the way to God.

My friend, come to God through Christ, by faith in Him.
