Ac 8:20 But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!

All of God's gifts are free. The principle contained in this verse can be applied to salvation.

God is not a salesman selling salvation. He is not a trader who gives salvation in exchange for church donations, offerings, pledges, tithes, good works, religious activities etc., though many people believe and think so.

It is to lower the value of an infinite and priceless gift when it is given in exchange for money or anything that fallen man can do. Gifts are offered freely and are to be received freely. That's the nature of a gift. 
And you can have the free gift of salvation through faith in Christ.
